Shangri-La? Exploring glaciers in Ghulkin

The Hunza Valley is said to be the inspiration behind the mythical valley of Shangri-La in James Hilton’s 1933 novel ‘Lost Horizon.’ It’s really not difficult to see the reason.

Rehman is well-known in the Pakistani network of travelers for accommodating foreigners at his family home in Ghulkin, a small village in the Hunza Valley only 15 minutes from Gulmit.

We have contacted him a few days before to see if we can stay overnight. Busy about touring for Pakistani British families, he arranged for his wife Sitara to look after us. He called us the night before to arrange for a family friend to pick us up from our Gulmit guesthouse Saturday morning.

This is Pakistan, so only a few walk on time and our lift is almost an hour late. We didn’t mind, we enjoyed walking after breakfast in the guesthouse garden, watching apples fall from trees and apricots drying on the shelves.

When we drove to Ghulkin, we passed the Dutch and Hamish left. A man from Singapore at Rehan’s house (also left that day) said that they had all been there for the past 2 nights (Karakoram Bikers, the agency we all use in Gilgit recommended Rehman). We were the only ones there that night that we wanted to hear when everyone slept together in their room, the traditional Hunza room, and that meant we had …

Winter at The Great Wall of China

Winter at The Great Wall of China

China is the most difficult country to enter and exit. It took a lot of drama to be in Beijing and leave Beijing. Not only are immigration regulations strict, but language barriers are also a big problem. Chinese public security is very tight, many surveillance cameras are installed as in every city block. Sometimes it’s frustrating to be in Beijing, but sweet Beijing people who make this drama forgotten.

I spent four days in Beijing under the Beijing 144-hour visa-free tourism program. The point of my journey began in the city of Beijing, where I took half a day to recover from a long-haul flight. I calmed down the next day by spending the whole day walking around the city for a delicious bite of traditional cuisine and shopping on the famous Wangfujing Street. The aroma of Chinese food calls everywhere I go, which is hard to resist even when I’m not hungry. Peking duck and noodles are a must try!

The second day, Mike, my tour guide picked me up. We departed around 6am to avoid Beijing traffic and the trip took around four hours. Mike told me to take a nap and he would take care of me once we got there, so I slept in the car on the way there as Mike ordered. When I woke up, there was a lot of snow in the amazing …

Yellowstone Geology

Yellowstone Geology

Yellowstone is located on an active volcano! Three major eruptions have occurred in the last 2.1 million years, most recently 650,000 years ago. Magma only 3-8 miles down provides heat for thermal features at Yellowstone. The Upper Geyser Basin, home to the old faithful, is one of 3 large hot fountain basins along the Firehole River. We were there on a sunny day and we were treated to an eruption from 3 other geysers besides Old Faithful. For miles from the boardwalk, we passed many hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles.

At the north end of the park, boiling water and steam flow to the surface through limestone, which dissolves to form weak carbonic acid. When hot water reaches the surface, calcium carbonate is deposited to form a travertine terrace from Mammoth Hot Springs. This is the same process that forms a travertine pond in Pamukkale, Turkey.

The visitor center in Canyon Village has the incredible geological appearance of Yellowstone. Yellowstone River Canyon has thunderous waterfalls and multi-colored canyon walls resulting from ongoing geothermal activity.

The crater was left after the last eruption was filled with lava flows. Across the canyon from Tower falls is a remarkable example of the lava flow that cools slowly to form a Basaltic column.

Discovering the history and culture of Panama

We go to Panama! We enjoyed breakfast at The Cafe by Mise en Place at TPA airport before walking hot to MIA where we boarded a flight to Panama City. It was 54 degrees very cold when we left Miami, so when we landed in Panama, we were happy to warm up. The Pope had just gone to Panama and when we left the airport there were still big signs stating: “Bienvenidos A Panama Peregrinos” or Welcome to the Panama Pilgrim. Thousands of people came as pilgrims to Panama City to see the pope and even though he had left, there were still hundreds of worshipers living in churches and parks throughout the city.

We take a taxi from the airport to the Grand Central Hotel in Casco Viejo, Spanish for the Old Quarter, the historic district of Panama City, a UNESCO heritage site. Our tour guide Abdiel Luis was waiting for us at the hotel. He introduced himself as Abdiel Luis and even though everyone called him Luis, we were more comfortable calling him by his first name Abdiel. After finding our room with a nice balcony and unpacking, we arranged the Grand hotel located opposite the Plaza de la Independencia and the Basilica of Santa Maria la Antigua.
to explore our own environment.

The hotel is centrally located at Plaza de la Independencia or Independence Plaza with views …

Bucket List of Golf Courses – Walton Heath

Golf Courses - Walton Heath

Final Course for Golf Bucket Lists for UK – Walton Heath

Friday May 31 – Walton Health – wake up this morning with tired feet after an attempt to climb yesterday’s hill on St George. Graham had been looking forward to playing Walton Heath for years. When we started ordering courses for this trip our only disappointment was that we couldn’t get a reservation at Walton Heath in the Old Course because everything had been ordered and we were offered a round in the New Course. We decided that New would be better than skipping it all. Imagine our joy when we talked to the starter and he remembered our booking request for the Old Course and he said we had come this far, he would blackmail us into the Old Course field. We were really happy and it set the tone for the day.

This course is very busy because many professionals practice on the course ahead of Monday’s European Qualification Event for the upcoming US Open Event in a few weeks. There was a real rumor about the place and one of the players who practiced putting green was Min Woo Lee from Australia, (brother of Minjee Lee). He is a very good young man and we talked with him on the putting green, hoping for the best in the Qualifying Final.

Wow, how green is the practice …

Japan. Onsen Explorer Day

Japan. Onsen Explorer Day

Onsen travel Explorer Day 7. Mach 7 2019
Today is a short train ride to Aomori where we catch Shinkansen to the Kikonai, Hokkaido under the Tsugaru Straight. Enjoyable journey with a smooth and calm train. After changing into our cycling clothes, we headed south and around the coast to Matsumae. The first stop is at the Shinto Temple where we are told about how they operate and how to pray. Ring the bell, bow twice, clap twice, pray and bow once before the last ring.

About 25 km farther away, we saw our van and trailer entering the deep ditch and Ken looked confused. Apparently he stopped to take a photo and failed to apply the hand brake where he chose the least resistant road – vertically down. Ken called to ask for help, but fortunately after an hour or so, a passing truck pulled him out to continue the trip safely. Meanwhile we stopped for lunch at a roadside restaurant in Fukushima. Egg noodle soup is noodles and bean sprouts in soy sauce with a piece of pork floating on it without any signs of eggs.

When we were about to leave, Ken arrived in the van with a slight split into the plastic front bumper, a lucky unmarked man. We shoot along the coast with a tail wind at a very high speed – yes. We finally …
